Oakland Raiders @ San Francisco 49ers -2.5; O/U 45.5
Wow, just wow, what a matchup we have tonight in Santa Clara. When the NFL scheduled this game back in April, I don’t think they imagined a quarterback battle of Nick Mullins vs. Derek Carr. They were hoping for the Bay Area rivalry to be reignited as both teams fight to return to the playoffs. Well, that certainly isn’t the case as both of these teams are absolute dumpster fires right now.
For the 49ers, this once promising season has been a huge let down. The obvious loss of Jimmy G derailed any hopes of returning to the playoffs, but as one of few people who has suffered through their games this season the 49ers defense has been incredibly disappointing. San Francisco has spent four of their last six first round picks on the defensive front yet they still can’t generate any pressure on opposing quarterbacks (ranked 25th in sacks). Solomon Thomas has been an absolute bust and Reuben Foster has regressed significantly in year two. It’s been a frustrating season and now with CJ Beathard banged up it looks like were entering the Nick Mullins era. Who the f*** is that you may be wondering:
- His name is actually spelled Nick Mullens, doubt anyone picked up on that spelling error
- He played college football at Southern Mississippi, great mascot
- His grandfather, Ernie Tabor played Major League baseball for
the Philadelphia Phillies
Now on the Raiders side, the Jon Gruden era is off to a “rocky” start some would say. Things were looking good at the introductory press conference but its been all down hill ever since. He Jedi mind-tricked himself into trading away Khalil Mack and then subsequently said how hard it is to find a great pass rusher. Huuuhhh? Add in the fact he hasn’t been able to make it work with Derek Carr, who has taken a huge step back this season and may be on his way out. He did make a good deal getting a first rounder back for Amari Cooper but who has any faith in Gruden being able to capitalize on three first rounders in the upcoming draft? Oakland is only in year one of a ten year deal with Gruden so buckle in for some more chaos and head-scratching quotes.
If anyone is savage enough to bet on this game here are a few trends to note:
- Since 2017, 49ers are 3-8 ATS at home
- 49ers are 5-10 SU and 1-14 ATS their last 15 games as favorites
- Raiders are 0-5 SU its last five on the road
Woof, those are some putrid trends. If I’m someone who just can’t resist betting the Thursday Night game I’m putting my money on the Raiders. I’m not one of those people by the way, just putting myself in their shoes. 49ers shouldn’t be favorite over anyone at this point and especially with Nick Mullens under center. Expect this game to be as awful as you imagine it would be and take a deep, long look at yourself in the mirror if you actually bet on this.
Prediction: Raiders 24 49ers 15
